The Holy Secret
Half Day Course
Saturday, 10th May
“Thus, whoever wants to swiftly protect Both themselves and others
Should practise this holy secret
Of exchanging self with others.”
- From ‘Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life’ by Bodhisattva Shantideva
About this course
For many years Buddha’s teachings on the practice known as ‘exchanging self with others’ were not shared openly as they were easily misunderstood. Later, a Tibetan Buddhist master called Geshe Chekawa saw that there was great benefit in making the instructions more widely available and, with a sincere wish to help all living beings, composed the text, ‘Training the Mind in Seven Points’.
Because of his great kindness in composing this text and teaching it openly, and thanks to the kindness of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso in composing commentaries to this text suitable for the modern world, we now have an opportunity to receive these instructions and put them into practice.
On this course we will discover:
- A method to develop the deepest empathy
- How to purify negative karma with compassion
- The true source of our problems and how to overcome them
- How love can become an inexhaustible source of happiness
- How to practice all of these instructions skilfully, according to our own capacity
See the Q&A below for more info on our courses.

Our courses have three parts:
Guided meditation
Every course includes a chance to practise meditation. No prior experience is necessary and all the meditations are guided.
Teaching
From Buddha’s teachings, these practical talks help us to solve our daily problems and find peace, happiness and, if we wish, a deeper purpose in our busy lives.
Discussion
A chance to discuss the topic of the talk and meditation with others during the break over refreshments. No one is ever ‘put on the spot’ and asked to talk in a class. The teacher will normally make time for questions, and will be happy to clarify any points during the class too.

No special clothing is needed. Our courses do not include any physical exercise and most people choose to sit on chairs, though cushions are also set out for those who prefer to sit on the floor.

Other than removing shoes before going in to the meditation room (they can be worn as normal elsewhere) and turning phones off during session, there are no special rules to follow. People are always very pleasantly surprised with just how informal, welcoming and down to earth Jangchub Ling is; you’ll feel right at home in no time.
